The Whole Kit & Kaboodle - project reviews

The projects were all so impressive that it is hard to really evaluate any of them because they are all so varied and individual. Clearly, everyone learned quite a bit in the process and is finding new ways to represent and express themselves in our emerging digital culture.

Ernesto - Visual Immersion - I agree with you about the shift towards visual immersion in both our mainstream and digital cultures. What you did with the drawing of the hand in Paint was really cool and shows an important aspect of visual literacy that not everything is as it initially seems and that there are layers of meaning and layers to every image. Yours was a tough act to follow and a great start to kick off the presentations. 10

Donna Davis - Relationships in SL - Your research is quite interesting and I think it will become an even more valuable field of work as we move increasingly towards relating with one another online and in virtual worlds rather than F2F. I'll be interested to see what you found from our surveys about learning styles because if one type does better in virtual worlds, and we are moving towards more immersive digital environments, then we need to consider the portion of the population that is not as adapatable to this kind of environment. Cool! 10

John O'hearn - Websites/Evidence of Frustration & Endurance Race Finder.com - It is good to see that you have tried different tools to promote your interests. If you are interested in Ning, there are lots of online tutorials for it. Ning is probably better for your project than just a blog because it is designed to support e-communities. The dog leash idea is cool too. I think you have interesting ideas that fit into open niches in the current market. Using an e-community or a central website to share info with people with your same interest in different types of endurance races shows that you are opening yourself up to being a part of the digital culture despite your frustrations. :-) 9

Ray Parkinson - Mad Creations - I'm glad to see that you went back and refined your website and are continuing to work on it. I would suggest consolidating your different sites into one to better promote your business. It is great that you can essentially establish your business now as a student and have that much more experience for when you graduate if you choose to make a career of it. The style of your site(s) and design seems to fit well with the kinds of events you are promoting. Keep it up and I know you'll do well. 9

Matt Gerstman - Terminal Tips for Today - Your presentation was extremely well thought out and put together. You have created a resource that is quite valuable and have presented it well in a manner that anyone could understand. You also are blessed with a natural "announcer's" voice. :-) I look forward to learning from your tips myself. 10

Aron Bender - Website Portfolio - I think it's great that you are developing a website to showcase your work into a sort of digital portfolio. I think as you become more comfortable with the process your site and page design will improve and look more cohesive and refined. 8

Diego - Digital Culture video - Your video was well put together and interesting in that it combined so much of what we've covered in this course so far and your own take on it. Your ideas of using the web as a compositional tool are interesting and seem to becoming more popular as our digital culture moves more towards an open source philosophy. I liked your style of doing a tribute to Burroughs using his own technique, only updating it for 2009. Nicely done. 10

Kevina Lee - YouTubing as a form of mass communication - First, I thought your idea of creating a video birthday card was really cute and original and something I'm sure your friend really appreciated. It is amazing how quickly YouTube has grown to become such a large part of our daily lives and mainstream culture in the few short years since its inception. I could almost see you doing a sort of YouTube playlist as a portfolio or resume much more creatively than a paper one. This is a very timely topic. :-) 9

Alberto - blog, Flash, Linux - It is good to see that you are pursuing so many different aspects of what we've covered in class and exploring them by using so many different tools. Your Flash animations are impressive to me as someone who gave up Flash years ago and have had it on my to-do list ever since. Perhaps you could create some more tutorials yourself and add them to your blog so that you not only covered your progress with Linux but with Flash as well. I'll be interested to see how you make out with it. 9

Wayne Dewhirst - Twitter, FB - As a pragmatist, I like that you are using what you're learning now to help you design your architecture course content and structure. Your collage of road signs was really cool to me as I've always loved funky road signs and how the meaning changes depending on how your read them and where they're placed. Your notion of taking things from "real space" and translating them to cyberspace is very timely and it is interesting what you said about constructing meanings and morphing it. At first I thought your presentation was more about your exploration with online web 2.0 tools, but I appreciate your artistic applications of those tools as well. 10

Nate Poling - Machinima - This idea of using video games and MMO characters as "actors" in your machinima film is a bit foreign to me but I can appreciate the artistic value of it. You clearly put a lot of work into learning to do it and your video was well put together. You introduced some new tools as well that I'd never heard of. As such a large segment of the population is into gaming, I think this is an interesting area of digital culture and art to explore. :-) 10

Tiva - Vocaloid music - You know how when someone points something out to you and then you see it everywhere? The very next day after your presenation I heard the song you used for your example. This is an area of digital media that I was previously completely unfamiliar with but I can imagine that it will soon take over the U.S. just like anime and manga did. I find it fascinating that the Japanese would be more interested in a "created" voice rather than a real voice. You did a nice job of explaining this topic and the process for creating it. 10

Teresa O'Connor - plaza site, SL, graphics - Your site is well-organized and of an attractive design. I like this idea of a more professional web presence and sort of digital portfolio and think it will serve you well as you prepare to begin your career. 10

Chris Medlicott - blogs / websites - You have shown how easily you can use blog sites and tools to create your own website. The screenshots on the blog help to illustrate the process and steps you used to create your pages. I'll be interested to see your final product. Also, I liked how you deconstructed an avi to make an animated gif because I'm used to doing it the other way around. 9

Erin Wilson - Typography - As a former font collector, I found your presentation and examples interesting. Typography contributes a lot to how we interpret and understand printed and visual messages and I wonder how that will change as everything moves towards the digital and away from traditional print. I enjoyed reading some of the quotes on your Superfem page as they added to the meaning and message of your visual examples. 10

David Rountree - o2b Rockband blog - This is a good way to get your students communicating about what they're doing in your group and to share their learning and experiences with others. Adding this kind of interactivity to your group makes the experience that much richer for your students. You used a lot of handy online tools for the photos as well. I hope that the blog will sustain itself after you are gone. :-) 10

Namon - website, speed drawing - I liked the way you went through each category on your page and explained them. It was dynamic and interesting with a very clear design. There is always more than meets the eye. :-) 10

Collins - Blender - It was interesting how you explained your learning process. It looks like it took you a lot of time to work through the steps but that you really learned from it and will be able to expand on your knowledge base while creating a useful product to represent what you do in the larger digital culture. 10
