This is something i've been trying to replicate in after effects. It uses a particle system that releases over 10 million particles a second to create the smoke effect. The particle emitter is parented to the amplitude of the music. So the louder the music is the faster the movement is, or more particles are released. I thought it was interesting b/c you could parent it to midi files other midi parameters to control the movement of the effect to follow the music.... A lot of cool stuff can be used by midi to create some awesome effects and designs.
