Your Digital Culture Word for the DAY: TELEPRESENCE.
EVERYONE please google, research, copy/paste what you can find about the idea of telepresence and then place it in a comment to this post.
I'll explain this more on wednesday!

  1. Here is where student should place responses to Digital Culture Vocabulary word search:TELEPRESENCE

  2. According to the Human Productivity Lab website, telepresence is defined as "the science and art of creating visual collaboration environments, networks, and strategies that duplicate in-person meeting experiences as closely as possible."

This supports the notion that digital culture is truly global, which is only possible with emerging methods (such as teleprescence) that diminish the importance of distance and help make the world more connected and intimate.

Another interesting point found in the website states that the best "telepresence strategies place the human factors first, focusing on visual collaboration solutions that replicate the brain's innate preferences for interpersonal communications." So even with the most advanced computing technologies, the human factors and the advancement of cultural integration still takes precedence.

It's pretty interesting to see how far we've gotten toward "true" holograms ala Star Trek. I'm not too clear on the details as to how they've achieved the effect (not surprising, it's probably a trade secret), but I have the feeling it's more impressive on video and/or requires a very particular (and I would guess expensive) setup to look halfway decent live.

I have a feeling this sort of thing won't really take off until some company manages to develop something that could be used comfortably in-home and whatever service is required to run it allows adult content (because let's face it, a great deal of our technological advancements these days wouldn't have been possible were it not for the adult entertainment industry--I mean, surely everyone knows the saying, "the internet is for porn," and it was a driving force behind the birth of the home video industry among other things).

"In telepresence links, images and sounds are transmitted but there are no "senders" attempting to convey particular meanings to "receivers." Telepresence is an individualized bidirectional experience, and as such it differs both from the dialogic experience of telephony and the unidirectional reception of television messages.
We speak of the mass media as being means of communication, but if we look carefully at the logistics of the mass media we realize that what they produce is in fact non-communication. Baudrillard says that mass media are anti-mediatory because communication is "an exchange,(...) a reciprocal space of a speech and a response (11)."
"The totality of the existing architecture of the media founds itself on this latter definition: they are what always prevents response, making all processes of exchange impossible (except in the various forms of response simulation, themselves integrated in the transmission process, thus leaving the unilateral nature of the communication intact).
"Whether involving an exchange between two interlocutors or not, telepresence seems to create this space of reciprocity absent from mass media. The space created by telepresence is reciprocal because the decisions (motion, vision, operation, etc.) made by the "user" or "participant" affect and are affected by the remote environment."
"Telecommunications media now efface the distinction between themselves and what used to be perceived as something apart, totally different from and independent of themselves, something we used to call reality. Baudrillard calls "hyperreal," or "hyperreality," this lack of absolute distinction between sign (or form or medium) and referent (or content or real) as stable entities. One could say that the fusion of the medium and the real is particularly true in telepresence, since one can actually perform and change things in the real world from far away."

Telepresence allows more than sending/receiving information from a source. With it, it is possible to be able to exchange and manipulate the location in real time, and be able to actively engage in the particular environment or situation.

  6. Telepresence is a very interesting advancement in technology and communication. According to Wikipedia "Telepresence refers to a set of technologies which allow a person to feel as if they were present, to give the appearance that they were present, or to have an effect, at a location other than their true location."

As I read more about telepresence the more I mentally pictured holograms. Holograms were my only explanation for what I was reading. Maybe I'm wrong maybe I'm right but some compare telepresence to teleporting and that's something I jus can't fathom. Maybe I don't have a clear understanding of telepresence and maybe I never will becuase the technology needed for telepresence is definitely not cheap. We might see this technology in homes in the far future but not soon because there are still alot of people unable to use and understand a computer, so how could we expect them to accept telepresence.

When I think of telepresence, I think more along the lines of the virtual world and social networking, like avatars, facebook, chats, twitters, Sims, and so on. Telepresence, to me, is the cyber connection that merges the real world and the world people wish was real.
